DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

When Robert Quinlan & Karen Vaccaro conceived of the stage presentation And I Remember, they approached me and Robert Anderson to film the performance purely as a means of archiving their work. But when we discussed the possibility of interviewing the original subjects of the oral history (Mary Agnes, Char and Dorothy), we all began to see that there were dimensions to these stories we could richly expand on using archival imagery and ephemera from the lives of the these women themselves.

The end result, The Actual, Authentic Version of Who You Say I Am, is a condensed record of the Karen & Bob's stage presentation; our hope is that it conveys the essence of the stage presentation while broadening its inquiry into identity, memory and the ways in which every individual is a indispensable part of what we call "history".
